Wildlife Encounters: What You Might See on Sydney Harbour

Sydney Harbour isn’t just about stunning architecture and beautiful beaches – it’s also home to an incredible array of wildlife. Here’s what you might spot during your cruise with us.

Dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins are regular visitors to Sydney Harbour, especially in the eastern sections near the Heads. There’s nothing quite like seeing these playful creatures swimming alongside the boat. We’ve had dolphins bow-ride with us many times!

Whales (Seasonal)

From May to November, humpback whales migrate along the NSW coast. We occasionally spot them from the harbour, and our whale watching charters give you the best chance of an encounter.

Little Penguins

Yes, Sydney has penguins! Little penguins (also called fairy penguins) live in colonies around the harbour, particularly at Manly. Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot them.

Sea Eagles

White-bellied sea eagles patrol the harbour, and watching them dive for fish is spectacular. They nest around North Head and Middle Head.

Seals

Australian fur seals occasionally visit the harbour, usually hauling out on rocks near the Heads. Keep your eyes peeled!

Fish and Marine Life

The harbour is teeming with life beneath the surface. When we anchor for a swim, you might see everything from colourful reef fish to the occasional stingray gliding past.

Best Wildlife Viewing Tips

  • Early morning and late afternoon are most active times
  • Calmer conditions make spotting easier
  • Bring binoculars if you have them
  • Be patient – wildlife sightings can’t be guaranteed, but they’re magical when they happen
